The ability to learn from
birth to death sets human beings apart from other forms of life. The
greatest purpose of school is to unlock, release, and foster this
wonderful capability. Through grade 2, more often than not, this
natural curiosity is nurtured and supported, From grade 3 and on, it is
an immense challenge; to find ways to uncouple learning and
punishment.
Creating this learning
culture is the most important, difficult and perilous job of
school-based reformers. It means a drastic change in practices for
most schools. The nature of the workplace, our society, and learning
dictates that we need to learn as we go along, or we won't survive.

Kathy Curtiss helps
educators and schools to create this 'learning' culture, which must be
totally unique to each location. She works closely with the
Superintendent on District Wide Initiatives; side by side with the
Principal when focused on one school; and partners with each
individual educator who wants to address their practice regarding
'learning culture'. After 30 years, her experiences are broad and
deep. " I am looking forward to your next visit and the work you
will be doing with the schools. As I see it, the overall effort is to
change the cultural foundations of the organization to improve the
soil fertility for the improvements needed to take student
achievement to the next level." Dr. Rod Weston, Superintendent |

Kathy has
developed, along side her special education colleagues, a process for
involving students in their IEP, gaining voice, ownership and
self-advocacy skills. If we begin with the end in mind....we're
working for |
Students that can self-advocate in respectful ways,
reflect openly on their learning and
set
goals for growth and improvement
Parents that can listen to their children and
talk
with them about school and learning.
Teachers that have the skills and patience
to
teach students
to
self-advocate respectfully and deeply.
